I will be raising money for Survivors UK. Survivors UK help men who have been sexually abused and raises awareness of their needs. It is statistically documented that 3 in 20 men are affected by sexual violence and suicide is the biggest killer of men in the UK. Survivors UK run a donations based national helpline and offer both individual counselling and group therapy from their base in Shadwell, London, E1. The counselling and groups are for adult men (18 and over) who have experienced sexual abuse at any time in their lives and they also offer workshops for carers/partners/supporters of male survivors which is invaluable to the families.
It was difficult finding a charity to fundraise for, but I am happy I came across this one, and sure in my choice to raise money & raise awareness about this charity. Whilst the topic of raising awareness about sexual abuse amongst both men & woman is necessary, there is a lack of resources and communication especially for the male survivors. Survivors of rape who have suffered, often don’t know where to turn. With the varying levels of conditioning, the attitude that is often found amongst most men tackling any trauma is ‘just to man up’. I have witnessed & experienced this approach to be highly unproductive & further damaging. All survivors, both male & female, of any trauma, whether it be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological or even spiritual need the opportunity to heal.
